In the dark times, will there also be singing
Summer 2026
“In the dark times, will there also be singing?” “Yes, there will be singing. About the dark times.”
This issue takes its title from a line by Bertolt Brecht, written in exile as fascism spread across Europe and the idea of a shared future collapsed. It wasn’t meant as comfort, but as a method of resistance. You don’t sing to escape the darkness—you sing within it. To name it. To resist erasure. To stay awake.
Today, darkness no longer shocks—it numbs. Through manipulation. Through repetition. Through images that blur more than they reveal. Politics becomes performance. Mood replaces meaning. Critique dissolves before it can take shape.
So what does it mean to sing now? Perhaps it means holding form where form is meant to collapse. Not to inspire or reassure, but to remain present. Lucid. Clear-eyed. Resistant.
